Chelsea FC Memorabilia, Match Worn Home Shirt, Roberto Di Matteo, The F.A. Charity Shield 2000/2001

Roberto Di Matteo born in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, however with Italian parents which made him eligible to play for Italy.

Di Matteo started his professional career playing for Swiss sides Schaffhausen, Aarau and Zurich before being signed by Italian side Lazio in 1993.

The midfielder remained at Lazio for a successful three years before he was snapped up by Chelsea in 1996 where his career really took off.  He was signed by Ruud Guillit for a then club record transfer fee of 4.9 million.

The Swiss born midfielder impressed in his first season helping his side to a sixth place finish, the highest Chelsea had got in over six years. Alongside this Chelsea won the F.A. Cup, where Di Matteo set a record for the quickest goal in an F.A. Cup Final at Wembley (42 seconds) however it was later broken by Evertons Luis Saha in 2009.

In the next season Roberto won the Football League Cup, where yet again he played an influential part in the game scoring in a 2-0 win. Furthermore in that season Chelsea also won the Cup Winners Cup the first in over 20 years.

After a very succesful career Di Matteo then went into management. Firstly being manager of Milton Keynes Dons, before moving to West Bromwich Albion and then assistant manager at Chelsea.

Di Matteo started off as Andre Villas Boas assistant however when Villas Boas was sacked in March 2012, he took over as caretaker manager. Chelsea that year did not have a successful league campaign finishing 6th however they won both the F.A. Cup and the UEFA Champions League.

The following year Di Matteo was announced as the permanent manager but failed to impress as Chelsea were eliminated out of the group stage of the Champions League, therefore this meant that he was sacked after just eight months in the job. Some pundits and fans believe that this was the wrong decision by the chairman as it was too soon to get rid of him after all the success he had.
