Gus Poyet from Montevideo, Uruguay played 463 times in his career scoring 125 goals. Gus started his career at Grenoble, before then moving over to his home country Uruguay to play for River Plate.
At River Plate Poyet had a great scoring record for a midfielder, netting just under 30 goals in 78 appearances, however only remained at the club for a year.
The next move for the Uruguayan was Zaragoza in 1990.Gus Poyet stayed with the Spanish side for 7 years picking up two major titles in his time; the Copa del Rey(1993-1994) and the UEFA Cup Winners Cup(1994-1995). After a successful time in Spain, Poyet then decided to move to an english club - Chelsea.
Poyet struggled upon arrival as he picked up a serious injury which kept him out of the team for a while. However the midfielder returned just in time to play in the UEFA Cup Winners Cup Final, which Chelsea went on to win 1-0.
The Uruguayan went on to make 145 appearances for Chelsea ,bagging 49 goals, with two consecutive seasons being the second highest goal scorer at the club.
At Chelsea Gus Poyet won four major trophies; the UEFA Cup Winners Cup (1997-1998) , the UEFA Super Cup (1999), the F.A. Cup (1999-2000) and F.A. Charity Shield (2000)
After Gus Poyet retired he then went into management, helping the side gain promotion in to the Championship, then moved to manage Sunderland in the Premier League. He remained at Sunderland for two years, before being sacked after a poor run of form.
Poyet currently manages at AEK Athens in the Greek Superleague.
